Yellow Fang Plans

Here's the plans. Click on the link to download each one. These plans are to scale.

For those that have conventional printers you will most likely have to import them into a drawing or photo program, tile them or even cut up the image into several sections. Print each section and then tape them together to complete the drawing

Some Supply Notes Sent in by Mad Jack

Well after a lot of research I can come up with sources for most of the parts for Fang.

The chassis was built by Jim Davis, and if he followed current thinking in the mid 50s he probably used 1 3/8” 4130 chrome-moly tubing. The plans scale the wheelbase to 154”, with a 54” front and 34” rear track. There is a period chassis, which looks similar to the few shots that show Fangs chassis, available from www.alteredstatesmodels.com/index.html. This is listed as 186” but it doesn’t specify if that is the overall length or the wheelbase. It should be modifiable if necessary and this is the route I’ll go.

The front wheels were probably 2.50” x 19/20” Boranis on spindle hubs. I can’t find an aftermarket supplier for these but you can use the ones in the Outlaw kit and keep it in the Roth family. If anyone knows of another source please let us know.

The rear wheels are shown as Halibrands (10” x 16”) in one shot and what look like American Torque Thrust 5 spoke mags in another. I’ll be going with the Halibrands with 10.50 x 16 M&H Racemaster slicks. The Halibrands are available at http://www.afxnscaleresin.150m.com as are the Torque Thrusts. The latter are also available at www.fremontracing.com/resin_accessories.htm.

The front axle should come with the chassis while the rear is probably a narrowed ’57 Pontiac with Mickey Thompson magnesium third member. I haven’t located a source for this item. If anyone knows of source please let us know.

The engine is listed as a 392 Hemi. These were available only on the ’58 or ’59 Chrysler Firepower optioned Pontiacs. After ’59, Chrysler went with the Wedge engine until the second generation Hemi’s were released in the mid sixties. This engine is probably that used in the Big John Mazmanian Willy’s model but I haven’t confirmed this. Ross Gibson does a beautiful blown Chrysler of the correct vintage, available from www.scaledreams.com, which is probably the way I’ll go. However, if you use the Big John engine from the Willy’s kit then you will need the 392 GMC 6-71 blower and manifold available from http://www.afxnscaleresin.150m.com . They also have the 4 port Halibrand bug-catcher, M/T valve covers, and blower pulley and belt.

The zoomies will probably have to be fabricated from scratch as will the body and other fittings of course.

The gearbox/coupling is described as a Donovan torque tube and could easily be built from scratch.

Enjoy your modelling.
