Randy's
Signs The Zaideman Family Story P 6
LIFE TOGETHER IN THE SIGN BUSINESS
When they got
to Kansas, they opened a shop in Junction City, a small military town near Fort Riley,
after five successful years, the business was destroyed. In July of 1991 two juveniles
broke into their business and set it on fire, turning the entire contents of the building
to ashes. They lost fifteen years of photographic history (personal and business) and all
of their credibility. The Gulf war had just ended and to survive during the absence of the
military during the war, they had also cancelled their business insurances. Theirs was the
first of fourteen fires set by these kids, but some of the people they had done business
with in the small military town assumed they had set their own fire, and others were
afraid to do business with them for fear of it happening again. After the kids were caught
six months later, those same people were now embarrassed to do business with them because
they had thought those horrible things about Randy & Jeanne. |

By August of 1992, Randy & Jeanne decided to close up their
failing business and move to Indiana where they both had relatives. Three years later,
after being financially "burned" by one of those relatives, denied unemployment
and slandered to the point of not being able to find steady work as a result of the
relative's actions, they decided to move back to California. Since Jason, their oldest
boy, would be going into the Army shortly after their move, they all decided to make a
family vacation out of the move. They left Indiana in early May, as soon as school was
out, and planned their route through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota,
Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and finally California. Camping was the cheapest and most
fun way to go, so they stayed at KOA campgrounds all across the USA, and lettered R.V.'s,
trailers and trucks for extra money. |
They arrived in early July of 1996 and unable to find anything
comparable to living in the peaceful Midwest, they moved back up to the San Gabriel
Mountains (out of the big city "rat race") where they had lived before. |
They now own a small sign and pinstriping shop in Azusa,
at the foothills of their beloved mountains. Sign painting has been a struggle, trying to
compete with low priced vinyl shops. Randy and Jeanne finally found their niche in the
Kustom Kulture venu their pinstriping, flames, murals and funtional art work fills the
bulk of their business. Their son Jeramy, now 20, helps out at the shop and is becoming
quite an accomplished striper. Their daughter Amanda, 16, goes to school and helps out
with lettering and cartooning. Their eldest son Jason 22, is still in the army in Kansas,
soon to be married, he is also a very talented artist and plans to pursue the field as
soon as he can.
